Gloucester Rugby Supporters Association deprecates the claims of racism made by Mr Rob Andrew, during and/or after the game between Gloucester RFC and Newcastle RFC at Kingsholm on 29.12.2001, in so far as they relate to Gloucester supporters. We consider them to be without foundation, untrue, and defamatory.

At a meeting of the directors of GRSA on 03.01.2002 it was unanimously agreed that, subject only to ratification by GRSA's members, GRSA will seek redress against Rob Andrew, and possibly others, through the courts as necessary, in the event that we do not receive an unreserved apology from both Newcastle RFC and from Rob Andrew personally.

GRSA does not have an issue with Newcastle RFC's supporters, with whom it has always had good relations and who have been made as welcome at Kingsholm as we have been at Kingston Park.

Gloucester RFC's support, home and away, is legendary and perhaps the envy of many premiership clubs. It is our view that Gloucester rugby supporters are committed, proud, passionate and vocal but not racist. Raucous sometimes, racist never.

We understand that there is a legal maxim to the effect that he who alleges must prove. Rob Andrew chose to make some of his remarks in the forum of a press room. It is our aim that he will be called upon to substantiate them in a higher forum, the Royal Courts of Justice.

We have asked Gloucester RFC's permission to raise funds at home games, in order to cover our legal expenses, and we confirm that they have agreed to this request.
